Dussehra at Nursery: Where Tradition Meets Sustainability

The Nursery children of Seth M. R. Jaipuria School vibrantly celebrated the Dussehra festival on 16 October 2026 to mark the symbolic triumph of good over evil and the ultimate prevalence of light over darkness. The festival is particularly meaningful to the School, given that the motto ‘From Ignorance to Knowledge’ is etched on the School uniforms of the children.

No important School event is complete without the participation of the larger community of families. Equally, no School celebration is organised without giving thought to the crucial principle of sustainability. The School beautifully interwove the tradition of parent collaboration and the practice of sustainability into the Dussehra celebrations. The parents and the children collaborated to make paper dandiya sticks and decorated them with scintillating and eye-catching colours and patterns, complemented by gorgeous tassels. The dandiya sticks were works of art, serving as powerful creative testaments to the special bond shared amongst the School community. Perfectly matching the vibrancy of the handmade dandiya sticks were the splendid traditional attire worn by the children. They danced elegantly and rhythmically to the lively beats of Garba and Dandiya, embodying the spirit of the festival resplendently.

Beyond the joyful celebration of Dussehra through dance, the children were also exposed to creative activities and intellectual engagement. The walls of the Nursery halls were exquisitely adorned with pictures of Maa Durga coloured by the children. In addition, the children also created the Goddess’s vahana by making paper lion faces, with manes made from leaves. Using similar sustainable practices, they also created bows and arrows to symbolise Lord Ram’s victory over Ravan.

The children were shown videos that narrated the stories of Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura and of Lord Ram’s triumph over Ravan. A story-sequencing activity helped them recall and arrange key events in the correct order, adding intellectual rigour to the cultural celebration. In the value-based discussions around these themes, they learnt about the spiritual significance of these victories, particularly the inevitable triumph of truth over falsehood. The children also explored the nine forms of Maa Durga and connected the nine Shaktis with the values of the School’s four houses of Wisdom, Harmony, Strength, and Perfection. Through the diverse activities of the day, the Nursery children observed Dussehra in a spirit of meaningful learning and vibrant celebration.
