Mahua ji is an empanelled artist of ICCR in the category of established Kathak dancers and is an A Grade Kathak artist from Delhi Doordarshan. She is also a disciple and protégé of Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj ji, and a Gandha Bandh Shaagird of the great Sarangi Maestro Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan ji.
Organised by SPIC MACAY, the session was initiated with Zaheen Khan ji on Tabla, Shuheb Hasan ji on Harmonium and Vocals, and Nupur Shankar ji on Padhant.
The event commenced with the Krishna Vandana, after which Mahua ji went on to share with the students the ‘Yatra of Kathak’ from temples to zamindars to the Mughal courts with the emergence of the Lucknow gharana. The portrayal of rhythm through music and dance – thumri and jugalbandi mesmerised all, while presenting an insight into this Indian classical dance form. Her interactions with the students, answering their queries on music, dance, expressions and rhythm, acted as a source of inspiration for the young minds.
