The Art of Storytelling – Nursery Parent Collaboration

The Nursery classrooms at Seth M.R. Jaipuria School, Gomti Nagar, had a cheerful buzz as parents joined their children for a special storytelling session. This activity was part of the school’s parent collaboration programme where learning and fun go together.

The purpose of the session was clear: to help parents see storytelling as a useful learning tool that builds listening skills, adds new words to a child’s vocabulary, and strengthens the parent–child bond.

The morning began with a warm welcome and a short quiet pause. An easy icebreaker followed, where parents shared favourite stories from their own childhood. Many said these stories were passed down by their grandparents.

Parents then joined quick activities that made storytelling lively: short narrations, trying different voice expressions, and impromptu storytelling using small props like hats, glasses, and balls. The prompts were everyday situations such as brushing teeth, putting toys back after playtime, and sharing with friends and more.

An audio visual demo compared a video story with a live in person telling. It showed how a real voice, eye contact, tone, and expression make a big difference in how children connect with a story. Teachers also demonstrated silent storytelling, using only expressions and actions, to help children name and handle feelings in class.

After the session, one parent remarked, “After sitting and hearing all the stories then making stories by myself, I realised how powerful and fun storytelling can be. Even during the impromptu sessions we were able to weave stories that brought a new learning for the children. I am excited to try this at home with my little one. Thanks to Jaipuria and teachers for facilitating such a memorable experience.”
