A Morning that belonged to Grandparents — UKG Grandparents’ Day at Seth M.R. Jaipuria School

The UKG wing of Seth M.R. Jaipuria School celebrated Grandparents’ Day in a way that felt warm and heartfelt. At the entrance, tiny hands held tightly to familiar, loving ones as children walked in proudly beside their grandparents. Each grandparent was welcomed with a traditional tilak, setting a cheerful tone for the morning ahead.

Two activities unfolded simultaneously across the campus. On one side, the no-fire cooking station turned grandparents into the afternoon’s real stars. Nana-nanis and dada-dadis assembled shrikhand, corn chaat, dahi batashe, cold pasta, burgers and more, working with the quiet confidence of people who have been feeding families for decades.

On the main stage, the open mic was running at full warmth. A grandfather picked up his harmonica and played Hai Apna Dil To Awara Na Jaane Kispe Aayega, the old Hemant Kumar classic, with the ease of someone who has carried that song in his chest for years. Another grandparent’s Radha Rani ka Bhajan settled over the assembly ground like stillness arriving in the middle of a busy morning. And then a grandfather sang Babam Bam, the kind of song that gets into your feet before you realise it has.

Once both stations wrapped up, grandparents gathered for the SMR Samvad, an interactive dialogue led by Principal Mrs Promini Chopra Ma’am and Head Mistress (Pre-Primary) Mrs Kanika Chopra Ma’am, aimed at building a more conscious and connected school community.

One grandmother shared the values she inculcates in her little one, saying, “I teach my grandchild to offer four namastes after waking up. The first to God, who created us. The second to parents, who held us in their lap. The third to teachers, who gave us knowledge and wisdom. And the fourth, the most important, to those who have given us the chance to sit beside them, to share their lives. Thank you.”

Another grandmother shared how being with her grandson brings back her own childhood. She said, “Grandchildren are God’s most precious gift to us. But for dada-dadi and nana-nani, they are also our dearest friends. When we were parents, there were many responsibilities and we could not always give our children enough time. Grandchildren fill that space. When I am with my grandson Hitarth, I forget my age. I become a child with him. That joy is something very special.”

The performances began with shloka chanting. UKG students recited verses from the Srimad Bhagavad Gita in clear and confident Sanskrit. Many grandparents leaned forward to take pictures and videos. Some looked at each other with proud smiles.

After this, while the children were getting ready backstage, the song Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu played, and the grandparents enjoyed every bit of it. A few of them even stood up and showed off some cheerful dance moves.

The performances concluded with a special dance presentation. It began with a Ganesh Vandana, where devotion and graceful movements came together beautifully. As the music built up, the children loudly chanted “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” and their united voices instantly lifted the energy of the audience.

The performance then flowed into Beautiful by Amit Trivedi, bringing the sequence to a softer and warmer close. It was a fitting end to a series of performances that had held everyone’s attention from the very beginning.

The grandparents who cooked dishes during the non-fire cooking activity were felicitated with plants as a token of appreciation.

As part of Seth M.R. Jaipuria School’s initiative towards a greener and more conscious earth, grandparents and children came together to plant saplings. Small hands were gently guided by larger ones as they pressed the soil into pots. Each planted sapling was then carefully placed in its designated area across the school campus, marking a shared commitment across generations.
