SPIC MACAY at Seth M.R. Jaipuria School: Dr. Sucharita Gupta Enchants Students with Banaras Gharana

On Wednesday, 8th October 2025, Seth M.R. Jaipuria School, Gomti Nagar, hosted an enchanting session of Indian classical music, featuring the illustrious Dr. Sucharita Gupta, accompanied by the distinguished maestros Pandit Pankaj Mishra on harmonium and Pandit Lalit Kumar on tabla.

The programme commenced with a minute of silence to invoke the divine within, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, and the national song वन्दे मातरम्, creating a reverent and uplifting atmosphere.

Dr. Sucharita Gupta, a celebrated voice of the Banaras Gharana, was then introduced. Born in Assam to a Bengali family, she began her musical journey at the age of six, inspired by her father. Known for her soulful renditions of ठुमरी, दादरा, छैती, and कजरी, Dr. Gupta’s voice effortlessly captures devotion, emotion, and the timeless charm of Banaras.

She began her performance with a patriotic song:
“देश के हर व्यक्ति में अभिमान होना चाहिए,
नित्य वन्दे मातरम् का गान होना चाहिए।”

Following this, she performed गुरु चरणन चित्त धरी, invoking reverence and gratitude towards her teachers. She then sang भैरवी from Banaras — “आया करे ज़रा कह दो सवँरिया से…” — and rehearsed with the students, practising the seven सुर — सा, रे, ग, म, प, ध, नि — before singing them together, creating an interactive and immersive learning experience.

Dr. Gupta also familiarised the students with the connection between Indian classical music and the six ऋतु (seasons). She explained that during वर्षा ऋतु, songs related to swings and gods’ swings are traditionally performed; during चैती ऋतु, चैती is sung; and, inspired by the legendary बिस्मिल्लाह ख़ाँ साहब, she presented कजरी along with several ठुमरी, immersing students in the rich tapestry of Banaras’ musical heritage.

She concluded her performance with a joyous Diwali song, beautifully setting the tone for the forthcoming festival and leaving the students captivated. The session ended with the national anthem, as students expressed their admiration and awe at the depth, devotion, and magic of Dr. Gupta’s voice.

The SPIC MACAY programme at Seth M.R. Jaipuria School was a remarkable celebration of India’s classical traditions, inspiring students to appreciate and cherish the enduring legacy of the Banaras Gharana.
