Dussehra and Navratri Celebrations: Teaching Transformation Through Traditional Tales

At Seth M.R. Jaipuria School’s nursery and pre-primary wing, the celebration of Navratri and Dussehra transcended mere festivities, evolving into a profound journey of conscious transformation. Classrooms were transformed into vibrant cultural spaces with beautiful decorations adorning the walls. This year, the festival took on deeper meaning as young minds discovered that true victory lies not in destruction, but in the conscious evolution from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to light.

The celebrations centered around the school’s core belief in conscious transformation – the understanding that positive change emerges from within. Rather than simply depicting Ravana’s defeat, children learned that even the ten-headed demon king could transform through conscious choice. Students were encouraged to reflect on their own inner qualities they wished to change, making the ancient tale personally relevant and transformative.

Throughout the week, children engaged with traditional practices including dandiya dancing, sweet sharing, and cultural dress-up activities. The celebrations seamlessly wove together artistic expression, storytelling, and moral education. Teachers facilitated discussions about values like respect for elders, love for nature, humility, helpfulness, and family bonding, drawing parallels between mythological characters and real-life behaviour.

The youngest learners in the Nursery experienced an enchanting week filled with vibrant cultural immersion. Dressed in colorful traditional Indian attire, children participated in energetic Dandiya dances that filled the atmosphere with eternal joy.

The highlight was a live Ram Leela performance by their teachers, where the epic story unfolded before their eyes in the activity room. Children watched with wonder as the timeless tale of good triumphing over evil came alive through dramatic storytelling and engaging performances.

The LKG students embarked on a creative journey through art and storytelling. They painted vibrant Maa Durga’s feet using their tiny hands and fingers.

Dynamic visual storytelling featuring the goddess Durga’s battle against evil illuminated the timeless message of righteousness prevailing over wickedness. Story time brought Ramayana characters to life, teaching children about being brave and caring for family. The children then shared their own thoughts about what the epic meant to them and what lessons they learned.

The UKG class experienced the most comprehensive celebration, combining craft activities with deep moral learning. Students created colorful cutouts of Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman, bringing characters to life through their artistic expressions. They participated in dramatic storytelling sessions and even performed their own version of the Ram Leela, demonstrating their understanding of the epic’s moral lessons. The innovative approach included encouraging students to identify personal qualities they wished to consciously transform, making ancient wisdom relevant to modern character building.
